LEAD SEALS: Sealing the Heritage of Byzantium
19.10.2019 - 17.11.2019
Following a successful presentation at Biblioteca Classence of the Municipality of Ravenna, the Maria’s Kombatsiari present exhibition with the title “LEAD SEALS: Sealing the Heritage of Byzantium” takes place in the Museum of Byzantine Culture. Thessaloniki is the second station in a scheduled itinerary in byzantine cities, whereas this particular presentation is part of a series of events under the title “Byzantine World” which is undertaken by the cultural organisation “Byzantine Thessaloniki”. The events will be inaugurated by the Ecumenical Patriarch, Bartholomew I. Moreover, it has been included in the exhibition of the summer edition of “Tempo-Forte Italy-Greece 2019” that is organised with the collaboration of the Italian Embassy in Athens and greek and italian institutes aiming at the promotion of culture between the two countries. A bilingual catalogue has been published for the needs of the exhbition with texts written by Dr. Panagiotis Kambanis, archaeologist and Miltiades Papanikolaou, historian of art, Professor Emeritus (Retired) of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The works have been inspired by minor art products, lead seals, artistic objects that have been used in the past in diverse periods to assert the authenticity of the signature of their users, in acts that this was considered as necessary. They are also figures incompatible to the christian ideas which though are “met” in the context of the Byzantine Art as remnants of the pro-christian days. The exhibits are engraved (etching, acquatint) with diverse intervented methods and treatments.
Exhibition’s editor: Dr Panagiotis Kambanis, archaeologist.
