MEMORIES OF MONUMENTS
20.04.2018 - 17.06.2018
The Museum of Byzantine Culture, Thessaloniki and the Museum of Photography “Christos Kalemkeris” of the Municipality of Kalamaria, under its new president Mr Pavlos Kalemkeris present the exhibition of authentic archival material of the Museum titled “Memories of monuments” from 20 April to 17 June 2018 at the “Kyriakos Krokos” temporary exhibition wing of the Museum of Byzantine Culture of Thessaloniki.
Drawing upon authentic material from the most notable archive of the Museum, the exhibition presents the itinerary a contemporary walker can have, starting from the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Arch of Adrian, walking up to the Parthenon and the Philopappos Monument from where one can overlook the entire region of Athens. The presentation of the history of each monument, through the ideological and artistic perspective of the pioneer Greek and foreign photographers, such as Philippos Margaritis, Demetrios Konstantinou, Konstantinos Athanassiou, Petros Moraitis, Romaidis brothers, Nelly’s, Henri Beck, John Stillman, Felix Bonfils, James Robertson, Underwood & Underwood– inclines us towards an exceptionally interesting acquaintance with the antiquities of Athens, creating an exhibition whose photographs form part of the lavish volume published by the Museum under the title: “Memories of monuments, the photographic depiction of ancient monuments of Athens during 19th century”, based on the research and documentation by Maria Farmaki, Dr Archaeologist.
The exhibition, along with the rare publication, contribute to a unique research, historical, artistic and cultural display, which highlights the spirit of Hellenism in time and promises to offer an exceptional “trip” and a unique experience to the visitors.
The photographic exhibition is completed by three new media applications presented in collaboration with the Information Technologies Institute (ITI) of the Centre of Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH). The applications offer a varied perspective of the exhibition and are approachable by visitors of all ages.
The exhibition will be inaugurated on 20 April 2018 at 20.00 by Theodosis Bakoglidis, Mayor of Kalamaria.
