Conserved sacred relics of the church of St. Paul of FAATH

The collaboration of the Museum of Byzantine Culture with the FAATH (Charitable Brotherhood of Gentlemen of Thessaloniki) regarded the conservation of 30 sacred relics of the church of St. Paul of FAATH that took place in the museum’s corservation workshops and lasted from May 25th, 2012 to June 9th, 2012. The conservation was followed by an exhibition in the Gallery room of FAATH and the publication of the temporary exhibition’s catalogue.
The church was erected according to the plans made by X. Paionidis at the beginning of the 20th century, outside the east walls of Thessaloniki, where a cemetery of palaeochristian period was situated.
The collection consisted of 26 icons (11 with a metallic standing and 15 with a wooden standing), 1 metallic monstrance, 1 artwork on canvas (oil paintinf of Periklis Lytras), 1 epitaphios and 1 ecclesiastical piece of furniture carved on wood.
The conservation regarded consolidation, cleaning and aesthetic retouching. Also, the conservation workshop of icons of the Museum of Byzantine Culture initiated a reasearch for the identification of the materials used in the artworks in collaboration with the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, the department of Solid State Physics, School of Physics and the Laboratory of Structures, School of Mechanical Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In the context of this research a dissertation of the undergraduate student, Anastasia Rousaki, department of Solid State Physics, School of Physics was also conducted.
