TIME + PLACE Twenty two poems of C. P. Cavafy, Twelve images of Ch. I. Xenos & Poems in whole
31.05.2013 - 31.08.2013
The Museum of Byzantine Culture, honoring the anniversary of 150 years since the birth of the great Greek of Alexandria, the poet Constantine Cavafy, organizes two temporary exhibitions, in the frame of the honorary events of the “Year of C.P. Cavafy”, as it was declared by UNESCO and the Ministry of Education and Religions, Culture and Sports. Specifically, the following are presented: the exhibition of the artist Ch. I. Xenos, titled “TIME AND PLACE”, Twenty-two poems of C. P. Cavafy, Twelve images of Ch. I. Xenos, and an exhibition of publications, dedicated to Constantine Cavafy, titled “Poems in whole”. The exhibitions – the opening is on Friday, 31 May, at 8.30 p.m., in the wing of temporary exhibitions “Kyriakos Krokos” of the Museum – will remain open to the public until 31 August 2013.
Charis Xenos, deciphering the messages, emitted by the poetry of Cavafy, chose twenty-two poems and painted twelve paintings with symbolic or allegorical content, which come from comments on Cavafy’s poetry, combined with memories and impressions. The exhibition, titled “TIME AND PLACE”, on the visual symbols of the ancient world, was first shown in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens in 2010. In 2011 Charis Xenos focused his interest on the symbolic writing of Cavafy and the exhibition, enriched with new works, was presented in the Benaki Museum of Islamic Art under the same title, under which it is presented in the Museum of Byzantine Culture. In 2012, the same exhibition was transferred to Constantinople, where it was exhibited in Mimar Sinan Güzel Sanatlar Üniversitesi Yayinlari.
In the same place, in the wing of temporary exhibitions “Kyriakos Krokos”, an exhibition of publications, dedicated to Constantine Cavafy, is presented, titled “Poems in whole”, demonstrating the universality of Cavafy’s poetry. This is a total of 80 editions from around the world, many of them rare, from Greece and Great Britain to Chile and the USA, with poems, translated into 16 languages. Many of the publications constitute a generous sponsorship of known publishers. The publications are part of the personal collection of Dr. Panagiotis Kambanis, archaeologist of the Museum of Byzantine Culture.
