Hyperpyron of Manuel I Komnenos
The one side, which is convex, depicts Christ in the type of Emmanuel, i.e. young and beardless. He is flanked by the inscription ΙC- ΧC (Jesus Christ) and around the perimeter is the invocation “Lord, help”. The other side, which is concave, depicts the emperor Manuel I full length wearing imperial vestments and holding globus cruciger. The hand of the God emerges in the upper right. In two columns, left and right, reads “Manuel despot born in Purple”. The coin was struck at the Constantinople mint.
