Wall painting with a representation of the Dormition of Saint Nicholas
The wall painting is part of the decoration of the post-Byzantine church of Saint Nicholas that was founded in the east of the Ancient Agora of Thessaloniki after 1722. In the centre, a bishop is surrounded by choristers wearing the distinctive round hats worn by the choir leaders in the churches of Thessaloniki. The facial expressions of the figures convey a sense of restrained sorrow and inner concentration, as demanded by their participation in the ceremony.
