Lead seal of Niketas Chalkoutzis protospatharios and episkeptites tou Meandrou from the Zacos Collection. On the one side an invocation which continues on the other side reads + Κ(ύρι)ε β(οή)θ(ει) τω σω δού(λω) Νικήτα (πρωτο)σπαθαρίω / (και) επισκεπτίτ(η) του Μεάνδρ(ου) το Χαλκούτ(ζη) (Lord, help your servant Niketas Chalkoutzis, protospatharios and episkeptites of Meandros). Many members of Chalkoutzis family were administrators, military officers and politicians during 10th and 11th cent. “Episkeptites” were administrators of royal properties in charge of public works. The Meandros valley in Asia Minor was a fertile agricultural district during 11th century.
