Lead seal of the emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus (913-959)
Lead seal of the emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus (913-959 AD) from the Zakos collection. On one side is a depiction of Christ Pantokratoras with the initials IC-XC (Jesus Christ) to the right and left. On the back is the bust of the emperor Constantine VII, dressed in imperial robes, holding an orb with a cross in his right hand. There is a half-erased circular inscription which reads ‘+ Constantine’. The seal belonged to the scholar emperor Constantine VII, son of Leo VI the Wise. The depiction of the emperor on the seal is a wonderful example of portraiture of the time.
