Museum of Byzantine Culture “International Museum Day 2024”

On May 18, International Museum Day is celebrated all over the world with topics related to museums and the protection of cultural heritage. For 2024 the International Council of Museums (ICOM) has chosen the theme “Museums, Education, and Research”.

By choosing this particular theme, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) seeks to highlight museums as vital places of convergence of education and research, where innovation meets tradition, covering a wide range of fields from art and history to science and technology, and contributing substantially to the understanding of the world.

Museums, as dynamic agents of culture and education, have the potential to nurture and develop curiosity, creativity and critical thinking, providing the public with a comprehensive experience of knowledge and entertainment. Spaces open to all citizens, promote research and the dissemination of new ideas.

This year’s celebration of International Museum Day promotes awareness of a sustainable, empathetic and inclusive world. In this context, the Museum of Byzantine Culture participates in the celebration with the following action:

 

On Friday, May 17, 2024, at 10:00, the educational program titled “Unearthing… memories” will take place. This is an program for elderly people in collaboration with the Municipality of Thessaloniki, Deputy Mayor of Care for the Elderly. A group of elderly people from KAPI of the Municipality of Thessaloniki will visit the Museum of Byzantine Culture. Participants will draw information on selected objects from Room 2 “Early Christian City and Dwelling”, which will then be used as a trigger to elicit personal memories and lead participants to tell personal narratives

 

On May 18, International Museum Day, entry to the Museum of Byzantine Culture and the White Tower is free.
