On the convex side of the coin Christ is depicted on a throne, flanked by the initials “ΙC-ΧC” (Jesus Christ) and around the perimeter the invocation “Lord, help”. The concave reverse shows the emperor wearing imperial vestments holding a labarum and globus cruciger. The hand of the God emerges in the upper right. In two columns, left and right, reads the inscription “Alexius Komnenos Despot”. The coin was struck at Thessaloniki, the second city after Constantinople to issued gold coins at that time. On the coins of Alexius I Komnenos, as well as those of his descendants, the depiction of Christ and the appeal for help for the emperor are the dominant subjects.
