Icon on leather of Saint Nicholas
Saint Nicholas is depicted in bust length wearing his hierarchical dress, blessing with his right hand and holding a closed gospel in his left hand. Saint Nicholas appears in glory, against a background made of rectangular impressed motives and framed by riverine vegetation and two birds. Possibly this exceptional icon could have been a labarum (banner). Regarding its material and style, it bears similarities to an icon of the Forerunner (Timios Prodromos) belonging to Benaki Museum collection. The pair of the icons comes from Kastoria and dates from the late 17th century.
