On May 18th, the International Museum Day is celebrated around the world with museum and cultural heritage issues. For 2017, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) has chosen the theme “Museums and controversial stories: museums talk about those that are not said”.
By choosing this topic, ICOM wishes to highlight museums as institutions of social peace, believing that the presentation of controversial or disputed issues can be a first step for social reconciliation and the harmonious coexistence of people. Museums can contribute to the understanding of difficult, contradictory, or complex aspects of human history. In addition, as institutions of mediation and dialogue, they have the potential to play an essential role in the peaceful treatment of traumatic stories, offering multiple visuals and readings.
