The Museum of Byzantine Culture invites you cordially to the event, titled “The fire that gave birth to a city”, in the framework of the temporary exhibition “Into the Vortex of the Great War: Thessaloniki of the Armée d’ Orient (1915-1918)”. The event will take place on Friday, 9 February 2018 at 19.30 in the amphitheatre “Stephanos Dragoumis”.
In the first part, Aristotelis Mentzos, Professor of the Department of History and Archaeology in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Aleka Karadimou-Gerolympou, Professor Emerita of the Faculty of Engineering in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki will give speeches, while Dr. Agathoniki Tsilipakou, Director of the Museum of Byzantine Culture, will present and coordinate the event.
In the second part, the documentary film “Thessaloniki 1917 - The fire that gave birth to a city”, created by the director Gregoris Vardarinos, will be shown. The documentary film presents photographic material and films of the era, which, for the first time, come out in high definition, offering a fresh look on the dramatic events that changed the city’s physiognomy and transformed the medieval Ottoman Thessaloniki of 1912 into a modern European city of the 20th century.
The Avant Première took place in the 82nd Thessaloniki International Fair, where the film received the best reviews, while it was awarded a special honorary award in the 11th Greek Documentary Festival Docfest in the town of Chalkida, where its première was shown.
The documentary film is a co-production of the le plus petit chef and of the COSMOTE TV, with the kind support of the Thessaloniki International Fair-HELEXPO and of the Thessaloniki Port Authority.
